Frontier House Museum exhibits relics from reality show
By Montana Living Magazine

Would you have liked to homestead?" Last year, viewers of the PBS program "Frontier House" learned how the dream of homesteading met the reality. Three modern families "traveled back in time" to 1883, living off the land with the same type of tools, furnishings, clothing and food that Montana’s pioneers used. Now you can also see what their temporary homesteading experience was like at the Frontier House Museum in Nevada City.
Open from about June 1 through the end of September, depending on weather, the Frontier House Museum is a series of exhibits scattered throughout the preserved ghost town, where the families trained in the art of pioneer living for two weeks before their arranged homesteading adventure. Each of the families’ homes is organized and set up the way it was on the television show, allowing visitors to see the actual items used in the series.
Julie Johnson, operations coordinator at the Montana Heritage Commission, says people have really enjoyed the museum and that the comments range from "I could have homesteaded; I could have done it easy" to "You’ve got to be kidding!" Sometimes, Johnson adds, they marvel at what the modern families had to give up or how simple things today (not so simple then) are taken for granted. "People are amazed at not only how small the houses were but also how efficiently the space was used," Johnson says.
